FELT - The Process

To make this type of felt you take wool from a sheep, clean it really well, card it, sandwich the wool inbetween two pieces of fabric with large stitches through all thickness. Aggitate in a ringer washer until the thickness of the felt is about 1/4 inch thick. Then the fabric is removed and the felt is cut into pieces, dyed in pots and stitched together edge to edge.

Top left image shows the carding process. The wool needs to be combed before it can be laid out in rows.

Top right image shows how the pieces are dipped and dyed in pots.

Middle left image shows dyed pieces being placed out to dry.

Middle right images show close ups of the stitching.

Lower image shows pieces being fit into a design from a drawing underneath.
